For Ute Gfrerer the musical year of 2008 positioned her as one of the current leading performers of Kurt Weill and his works. The Austrian soprano sang “Lady in the Dark” in Essen and Frankfurt followed by “Three Penny Opera” in Athens in January, both productions with the Ensemble Modern Frankfurt under the direction of HK Gruber.
Recently she gave her debut as Anna 1 & 2 in “The Seven Deadly Sins” with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in the Herkulessaal in Munich in April…“Ute Gfrerer is one of the best Weill interpreters worldwide” one critic wrote still enchanted by that performance. Later this year and early next year she can be heard again in more performances of “The Seven Deadly Sins” with the WDR Symphony Orchestra in Cologne followed by a performance in Essen in early January and then in Brittany, France.
The repertory of this multitalented singer also includes roles in Mozart operas such as Susanna in “Le nozze di Figaro”, Donna Elvira in “Don Giovanni”, or Despina in “Cosi fan tutte”, as well as the role of Jenny in “The Rise and Fall of The City of Mahagonny” (Weill), Adele in “Die Fledermaus “ by Johann Strauss and Eliza Doolittle in “My Fair Lady” by Federick Loewe.
In addition to that she also sings new music, e.g. the role of Kathi in Gottfried von Einem’s opera “Der Zerissene”, Abigail Williams in Robert Ward’s “The Crucible” or the main lead in “Tania”, an opera about the abduction of Patty Hearst , written by American composer Anthony Davies.
Besides that Ute Gfrerer sings Musicals and Chansons and performs her own Cabaret Programs.
After her studies in voice and acting in Los Angeles she sang on staff at several opera houses in Germany and Austria (including the Vienna "Volksoper" for several years) before she went freelance.
Under the musical direction of conductors like Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Franz Welser-Moest and Ingo Metzmacher she sang as a guest in Zurich, Hamburg, Munich, London, Salzburg , Bregenz and of course Vienna.
She toured as a soloist through USA, Japan, Russia, the Ukraine, Mexico and Guatemala.
DVDs of several operettas featuring Ute Gfrerer can be found on Amazon, e.g. “The Merry Widow” a production of the Zurich Opera.
